Why is intonation important?
To ensure that the notes on a guitar sound in tune across the entire neck, the distance between each fret is precisely calculated using a formula to ensure that the notes are in tune at every position. When intonation is set correctly, you can be sure that your chords will sound perfect at every fret.
The tools you will need
- A reliable electronic tuner (preferably a chromatic model).
- A screwdriver to adjust the saddles (if your guitar has them).
- Please be patient, as this adjustment may take a little time.
Steps to Adjust Your Guitar's Intonation
- Tune Your Guitar Before you begin, make sure your guitar is perfectly tuned open, using an electronic tuner. Each string should be at the correct note (e.g., E, A, D, G, B, E for a standard guitar).
- Check the intonation at the 12th fret. Position yourself at the 12th fret of each string and play a note. The tuner should indicate that the note played is exactly the same as the root chord of each string. If it is not, the intonation will need to be adjusted.
- Adjust the string length if necessary If the note is too sharp (too high) or too sharp (too low), you will need to adjust the position of the saddle on the bridge. For a note that is too sharp, move the saddle back. For a note that is too low, move it forward.
- Check Again Once the adjustment is made, check the intonation again by playing the note at the 12th fret again. Repeat this process for each string.
Additional Tips
- Make sure your strings are in good condition. Worn strings can affect intonation.
- If the intonation remains incorrect despite adjustments, it may be necessary to consult a luthier to check if the problem is with a neck adjustment or the bridge configuration.
Adjusting your guitar's intonation may seem complex, but with a little practice and attention, you'll be able to improve the accuracy of your notes and make your musical performances even more precise and enjoyable. Take your time and make sure each string is properly adjusted to perfection.
