Rit dye and water-based varnish: what really went wrong on the Predator?
In the last video, I encountered a compatibility issue between Rite clothing dye and a water-based varnish. It was the first time I'd used this specific combination. Yet, I've already treated several guitars with Rite dye, always with good results, never experiencing any durability or adhesion problems. Have I simply been lucky so far? The question was worth asking, even if a bit late. So, I set up a small test to understand what had happened and to verify, once and for all, whether clothing dye is truly a reliable product for dyeing a guitar.
The protocol (not scientific, but revealing)
On a piece of plywood lightly sanded with 320-grit sandpaper, I applied four colors of Rit stain I had on hand: aquamarine (the one used on the Predator), scarlet, violet, and black. The color applied relatively evenly, with a good working time—a quality I appreciate about this product. Once the stain was dry, I divided the surface in two: one half would receive the remainder of my water-based polyurethane, the other the oil-based polyurethane used on the Predator.
Water-based varnish: abnormal behavior, confirmed
As soon as I applied the water-based varnish over the stain, something was wrong. The texture seemed to react immediately—as if the product thickened on contact. The varnish refused to level properly, remaining in visible streaks, whereas a drip on an unstained area normally formed a puddle that leveled itself. To understand the reaction, I mixed a little water-based varnish with a little Rite stain in a separate container. The result was immediate: the mixture gelled instantly. This confirms what had happened on the Predator—when it came into contact with the water-based varnish, the stain caused a reaction that altered the product's texture. A follow-up test with the oil-based varnish showed no such reaction: water and oil obviously don't mix, but there's no indication that the properties of the oil-based varnish were affected. The two technologies appear incompatible when mixed directly, but applicable one on top of the other in separate layers.
An interesting detail about the color
On raw wood, aquamarine stain gives a rather turquoise result. Once coated with oil-based varnish, it takes on an amber hue, consistent with what is usually observed with this type of finish. But upon contact with water-based varnish, the color shifts to a much more pronounced sky blue—a noticeable change in shade, probably due to an interaction with the pigments in the stain.
Adhesion test: the water-based varnish does not penetrate
The next day, I compared the appearance of the two halves. The oil side showed few brushstrokes. The water side, despite a second coat, had an unusual—almost rubbery—texture that didn't match its usual drying behavior. To check adhesion, I performed a simple cross-test: scoring the varnish in an X shape with a sharp blade, then firmly applying and removing strong adhesive tape. The oil side showed no peeling. The water side, however, gave way completely—the varnish flung off in a clear layer, confirming a direct adhesion problem with the Rite stain.
