This is simply not true. On my patriotically designed Explorer, with 12 coats of clear varnish applied entirely by hand, I achieved a result that could easily be mistaken for a factory finish. No spray gun, no professional shop. Just sandpaper, soapy water, automotive polishing compound, and above all, a great deal of patience.

This article details each step of the process, but also the Why behind each of them — because understanding the logic of leveling and polishing will save you from the most costly mistakes: sanding down to the wood on an edge, or worse, ruining a month's wait in one impatient session.

Why brush-on varnish can compete with spray-on varnish

Regardless of the application method—brush, spray can, or HVLP spray gun—no coat of varnish will ever come out perfectly smooth. Brushes leave streaks, spray cans create orange peel, and a poorly adjusted spray gun produces clumps or dry mist. This is normal, and it's even part of the process: you never apply varnish expecting a finished surface. You apply a sufficient thickness to then... flatten it.

In other words, the quality of the finish depends almost entirely on the application tool. It depends on the total thickness achieved (hence the 12 coats) and the thoroughness of the subsequent leveling work. This is good news for anyone without a compressor or paint booth: the brush becomes a perfectly viable tool, provided you accept that the real work begins after it's dry.

The step that cannot be skipped: complete hardening

This is where most DIY finishing projects fail—not in the sanding, not in the polishing, but in the impatience leading up to these steps. A varnish may feel dry to the touch after 24 to 48 hours. This is deceptive. Dryness to the touch corresponds to the evaporation of surface solvents, but the cross-linking of the film—the chemical process that actually hardens the varnish throughout—continues for weeks.

Sanding varnish that hasn't fully hardened causes several problems, often irreversible:

Abrasive paper sticks to and tears off the varnish rather than sanding it cleanly.

The film continues to shrink slightly after sanding, causing the imperfections you thought you had corrected to reappear (a phenomenon known as witnessing (among professional finishers).

The polishing compound, if applied too early, can leave holograms or a haze in the finish that will never completely disappear.

Waiting a full month before sanding is therefore not excessive caution—it's the minimum safety margin for a thickly applied varnish. If you're working in a cool or humid room, allow even more time: curing slows considerably below 18°C.

Progressive sanding: the grain-by-grain method

Once the varnish has completely hardened, the leveling is done in several passes, each with a finer grit than the previous one. The goal of each step is not to make the surface glossy—that's the role of polishing later—but to gradually remove the scratches left by the previous grit.

Grain

Role

600

Smooths out major imperfections: brushstrokes, orange peel, clumps.

1200

Erases scratches left by the 600.

1500

Further refine the surface, prepare the final grain.

2000

Final step before polishing — the surface should appear matte and uniformly satin, without any residual shiny areas.

Sanding is always done with soapy water (a few drops of dish soap in the water are enough). This wet sanding technique, or wet sanding, It serves two functions: it prevents the abrasive paper from becoming clogged with varnish residue, and it significantly reduces the risk of deep scratches caused by abrasive particles that detach from the paper.

How to know when to move on to the next grain

This is where oblique lighting becomes your best diagnostic tool. A work light held close to the surface, almost horizontally, reveals defects completely invisible under normal ambient lighting: dents, deep scratches, areas where the varnish hasn't yet been smoothed. Inspect the surface under this light after each grit, and only move on to the next when the marks from the previous grit have completely disappeared. Skipping this check risks sealing a deep scratch under subsequent grits—invisible until polishing, where it reappears, this time impossible to correct without sanding again.

The sensitive point: the edges and contours of the design

On a guitar with a painted design or a pronounced outline—like the fleur-de-lis motif on this project—the edges naturally receive less varnish than the flat surfaces. The liquid runs down the lower areas during application and drying, leaving the edges with a thinner film. This is precisely where sanding will wear through the varnish down to the wood—or worse, down to the design itself—if the same pressure is applied as on the rest of the instrument.

The rule is simple: slow down and reduce pressure as soon as you approach an edge or design line. Sand these areas separately, checking more frequently under oblique lighting, rather than treating the entire surface at the same pace.

Polishing: from satin to mirror finish

After the 2000 grit, the surface is uniform but matte. The final polishing is done with a fine automotive polishing compound—in this project, Meguiar's Ultimate Compound—applied using a cotton buffing wheel mounted on a drill. This type of compound, originally designed for automotive bodywork, works remarkably well on guitar varnish because it is formulated to cut very lightly without leaving visible micro-scratches.

Some essential precautions during this step:

Always keep the grinding wheel moving — staying in the same place, even for a few seconds, generates enough friction to locally burn the varnish and create a permanent mark.

Work in small sections, returning to check the result from several angles of light.

Clean the grinding wheel regularly: the accumulated compound hardens and can scratch the freshly polished surface.

The result, when the process is followed from beginning to end, is a surface that reflects like a mirror — without any trace of the original texture left by the brush.

Key takeaways

A mirror finish isn't about expensive equipment. It's about method and discipline: respecting curing times, progressing grain by grain without skipping any, systematically checking under oblique lighting, and polishing with a consistent motion. The materials—sandpaper, soapy water, a standard polishing compound, a drill—cost a fraction of the price of a paint sprayer and a finishing booth. What it requires in return is time: a month's wait that few people actually respect, and that's precisely what makes the difference between an amateurish finish and one that looks professional.

If you're finishing a similar project, the question you should be asking yourself isn't "what equipment am I missing?" but "did I really let the varnish cure long enough before getting out the sandpaper?" Nine times out of ten, that's where it all comes down to.

Il y a une croyance tenace dans le monde de la lutherie amateur : pour obtenir une finition brillante, digne d’une guitare de production, il faudrait un pistolet à peinture, une cabine de finition ventilée et des années d’expérience en carrosserie automobile.
