Why repair strap buttons?

Strap buttons are essential for securing your guitar. If they are loose or improperly secured, it can cause catastrophic accidents, such as dropping your guitar. Fortunately, these repairs are quick and inexpensive.

Necessary material

  • One or two suitable screws (wood screws preferred)
  • Wood glue (PVA or carpentry)
  • A syringe (optional, to apply the glue precisely)
  • Hardwood shards (or sturdy toothpicks)
  • A knife or cutter
  • A pair of cutting pliers
  • A cloth to clean up excess glue

Step 1: Identify and analyze the problem

Each strap button may have a different problem.

  1. First button : The screw is too short or unsuitable. Solution: Replace the screw with a longer or stronger screw.
  2. Second button : The hole is too large for the screw to hold firmly. Solution: Fill the hole with a material that will strengthen the fastener.

Step 2: Prepare the hole filling

For the hole that is too large, here is how to proceed:

  1. Choosing hardwood : Prefer a solid piece of wood (avoid soft woods like low-end toothpicks).
  2. Create wood chips : Using a knife, cut out thin, tapered pieces that fit the size of the hole. Experiment with several sizes to see what works best.

Step 3: Apply the glue

  1. Use a syringe : Fill a syringe with a little wood glue for precise application.
  2. Inject the glue : Put a small amount of glue in the hole.
  3. Prepare the wood chips : Coat the shards with glue, then insert them into the hole. Make sure they are evenly distributed and glued.

Step 4: Reinsert the screw

  1. Once the hole is reinforced with wood and glue, gently insert the screw.
  2. Attention : Do not overtighten the screw immediately. Let the glue set for about twenty minutes before tightening it completely.
  3. Clean excess glue : Use a rag to remove any glue that may remain on the finish of your guitar.

Step 5: Final result

After a few minutes of drying, test for strength. The button should now be secure and last a long time, even under tension.

Additional Tips

  • Do not overfill the hole : There should be enough space left to allow the screw to penetrate without forcing too much.
  • Work cleanly : Clean off the glue quickly to prevent it from drying on your guitar's varnish.
  • Prepare several shards : Having different size options will save you time.

With these few steps, you can repair your strap buttons quickly and efficiently, without expensive tools. This type of repair is not only simple, but also durable!
