How I Record Myself on Guitar and Shoot My YouTube Videos (Without Breaking My Head)
Want to share your guitar riffs with your friends or start your YouTube channel, but don't know where to start? No need for a complicated recording studio. Here My simple and effective method for recording my guitar and shooting my videos at the same time, with OBS and basic hardware.
🎛️ My basic setup
- Webcam
- SM58 microphone for the voice
- SM57 microphone for the guitar amp
- Audio interface (Universal Audio Volt)
- My cell phone to film (independently of OBS)
- Main software: OBS Studio (free)
🔧 Step 1: Install and configure OBS
- Download OBS Studio for Windows or Mac.
- Create your first scene (eg: “Test”).
- Add some sources : webcam, audio, screenshot.
💡 For the webcam or screenshot, you can resize them and place them wherever you want in the scene.
🎙️ Step 2: Add audio sources
In OBS:
- Right click → Add → Audio input capture.
- Select your inputs (eg: channel 1 = SM58, channel 2 = SM57).
- Go into the Advanced Audio Properties For :
- Skip the entries in mono.
- Panner left/right to better separate the tracks.
🎚️ Step 3: Manage audio tracks
- Settings → Exit → Registration → Activates tracks 1 to 4.
- Assigns the tracks in the Advanced Audio Properties :
- Track 1: vocals (SM58)
- Track 2: Guitar (SM57)
- Track 3: Desktop audio (system sound)
🧠 Step 4: Synchronize audio and video
Common problem: audio and video not synchronized.
Solution : make a test recording with a visual + audio cue (e.g. a visible and audible plectrum strike).
- Observe the lag in your editing software.
- Calculates the number of frames of shift (eg: 4 frames at 30 FPS = 133 ms).
- In OBS:
- Audio : right click → Advanced Audio Properties → between the offset in ms.
- Video : right click → Filters → Video Delay.
🖥️ Step 5: Edit in your software
I use Adobe Premiere, but other free software can do the job too.
- Drag the files (cell + OBS) into your project.
- Use the option Synchronize to align its + image.
- Keep the best video (often cell phone) and the best audio (interface).
- Links the audio track and video track together.
- You can also create a multicam sequence to switch between multiple angles.

- Configure your sources.
- Do a test to adjust the offsets.
- Edit with your favorite software.
- Record, play, publish!
